How to Calculate GPA
There are two methods for calculating GPA. Either of them can be used by a school or college.
Course based method.
Calculate the total number of grades in all the courses you are taking in a semester. For example if you are taking Biology, Maths and English and your grades are A, A, B+ respectively. Your GPA will be calculated as follows.
- Total of the grades: 4.0 + 4.0 + 3.3 = 11.30
- Number of courses: 3 (Biology, Maths, English)
- Your GPA is : Total of the Grades / Number of courses
- In this particular example, your GPA is 3.77
Credit/Unit based method

- Total of the grades: 4.0 + 4.0 + 3.3 = 11.30
- Credits for each course : Biology = 2 , Maths = 2 , English = 1
- Total of credit / units : 2+2+1 = 5
- Your GPA is : Total of the Grades / Total number of credits
- In this particular example, your GPA is 2.23
